I didn't celebrate Halloween much as a child. It was a matter of getting one of my parents to take me trick-or-treating, which neither of them did. I only remember one time when my mother took me, and never with my father.
My oldest sister took me when I was about 5 years old. I was dressed as Strawberry Shortcake. My neighbor's took me when I was about 7 years old in another city, and I think I was dressed as a clown. It was important to me back then, but became just another day.
When my parents got divorced, I had nobody to take me. My mom worked a lot, and my father never would come get me. My siblings were all adults at this point and I was basically on my own to just hang out at home, and watch Tales From the Crypt or some other Horror-related entertainment on cable television.
The first year of my parents split, I do recall my mom allowing me to buy cheesy Halloween Decor from Alpha Beta (a now-defunct Grocery store). We had a tiny tree in front of our apartment, and I bought a plastic skeleten that was no bigger than my arm and hung it from the tree. I also got fake cobweb and put it in the tree and the bushes around the front of our apartment. That was the extent of my Halloween.
In 1990, my friend Alethea D. had an older brother who worked for Knott's Berry Farm. She got us in for free to Knott's Scary Farm. I was terrified. I remember holding on to my friends, and keeping my eyes shut. I was still a bit too immature for horror.
In 1993, my first boyfriend, Michael G. took me to Knott's Scary Farm and I had a great time. I was 15 years old, and I was with someone who made me feel safe.
My daughter Sienna, from a different Michael A. was born in December 1996, and by October 1997, she still wasn't a year old yet, so she didn't begin Trick-or-Treating, and I didn't pass out candy. I dressed her up as a little pumpkin. And my sons whom were born after her, were also pumpkins for their first Halloweens.
Trick-or-Treating and decorating became a fun time with my children but then they grew up. I moved away in 2016 to Hawaii. My now-husband Trevor, was just my boyfriend at the time, and I wasn't able to celebrate Halloween with him, as he lived across the island. I passed out candy with my housemates.
The following year, we were living in our own place, but times were rough in Kalihi, Hawaii, and we didn't pass any candy out.
When we moved to Oregon on January 1, 2018, we didn't have much but our luggage. Soon enough, by April 2018, we were living in our own place, and began decorating and passing out candy. Trevor showed a lot of interest in doing this for the kids. He spent many years in prison before me and never was able to celebrate or do anything for his kids during holidays. As the prison is becoming long past, he has so many more Holidays left in him to celebrate and he really likes to go all out, especially with Halloween.
I'm enjoying the holidays with him and I have decided to document the Holidays in my Halloween blog.
